The Pale Girl
From a young age, Tori White knew the importance of protecting her fair skin from the sun. Even as a kid, she cautioned friends about the need for sunscreen when playing outside—and in high school, when they all laid out to tan, Tori felt left out. Still, whether she knew it or not, Tori had already started on a proactive path by avoiding sun damage and making smart choices that would keep her skin healthy for years to come.
“Ever since I can remember, my skin was not compatible with the sun or heat,” says Tori. “I burn easily, and it never turns into a tan—no matter how many times people say that it will!” Tori experiences rashes, hives, and irritation if she stays out in the sun without proper protection. Thankfully, her mother recognized these signs of hypersensitivity when Tori was a child and emphasized the importance of wearing sunscreen—not only to protect her delicate, pale skin but to reduce the risk of skin cancer, which runs in Tori’s family.
Like many fair-skinned people, Tori also has a lot of freckles and moles. She grew up feeling self-conscious about her skin and frequently using makeup to hide her beauty marks. As she got older, Tori tried self-tanning lotion to help her fit in, since tanning beds were too risky for her skin. “Looking back at pictures of myself, I see a girl who’s trying to look like everyone else,” she says. “People always commented on how pale I was, as if it was a bad thing.” Tori eventually outgrew her insecurities when she saw photos of an ultra-pale model with moles in a magazine. “I remember loving those photos and saving them,” says Tori. “From that moment on, I chose to embrace my freckles and moles instead of hiding them.”
Tori takes skin care very seriously and uses SPF on her face and body every day. She likes to use waterproof sunscreen that feels lightweight, since she reapplies it throughout the day. Whenever she puts on her sunscreen, Tori follows the two-finger rule: a method that involves squeezing sunscreen onto the length of two fingers and applying it to one section of the body (such as the neck or face).
