According to Dr. Laura Scott, simplicity is key when it comes to creating a realistic and effective skincare regimen. That's why she's passionate about teaching her patients how to maintain a glowing complexion without getting lost in a sea of products.
One of the most common skincare mistakes she sees people make is using the wrong products. "I often see clients using things because they saw an influencer, celebrity, or even their best friend use or recommend them," she explains. "I have to remind them that we all have unique skin. What works for one person is not always going to work for you."
Her biggest piece of skincare advice? Wear sunscreen every single day. She also suggests trying one product at a time instead of adding several to your routine at once and researching ingredients before buying anything new. "For example, vitamin C is something we hear about being a must-have, but while it's a great antioxidant for many, it might not benefit people with sensitive skin and conditions like rosacea," she explains. "Retinol and retinoid, which have holy-grail status, are other ingredients to be mindful of. They should be avoided if you're pregnant or have very sensitive skin."
As a Black woman and working mother, Dr. Scott is often able to relate to her patients. "I can't tell you how many times a day someone says they've been looking for a Black dermatologist or someone who understands," she says. "I connect with women and moms because I know what solutions are feasible. You can't apply some special cream three times a day when you're busy with a toddler!"
When it comes to choosing a reliable face wash, Dr. Scott recommends using the Good Molecules Rosewater Daily Cleansing Gel. "It has everything you want in a cleanser," she explains. "It cleans without over stripping, and, thanks to rosewater and pineapple extract, it has very gentle exfoliating properties that are compatible with sensitive skin."
Next, she suggests applying Avene's A-Oxitive Antioxidant Defense Serum, which contains vitamins E and C and helps protect against environmental stressors and free radical damage. "This is a good pick for skin that's starting to show fine lines and signs of aging," Dr. Scott explains. "It's lovely, very light, and hydrating."

It's critical to maintain an intact skin barrier. Don't go for anything too strong: Simple is best for busy moms and pretty much everyone else, too."
Another must-try in her book is the Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Super Glow Serum. It's packed with vitamin C to help improve the appearance of dark spots, sun damage, and signs of aging. "People who struggle with dark spots from old acne or melasma will love this product," Dr. Scott says. "After using a few drops once a day, you'll start noticing more even-toned skin. However, I suggest people with sensitive skin or active breakouts avoid this product."
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also help keep your complexion glowing, so be sure to stay active and eat nutrient-rich foods. Dr. Scott also advises sticking to products that are gentle.
