Finding products that agree with your skin is part of nailing down a skincare routine, but InStyle Beauty Editor Kayla Greaves believes keeping things simple helps, too.
Applying a lot of skincare products takes time, which is why, as she’s gotten older, Kayla has simplified her routine. Instead, she focuses on using a few core ingredients, including vitamin C and SPF. “Vitamin C is a gold-standard antioxidant ingredient that fights free radicals and helps even out skin tone,” she explains. “It has dramatically helped clear up my hyperpigmentation.”
Her go-to vitamin C product is Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner. “This product is an all-in-one deal,” Kayla says. “It has niacinamide and vitamin C that work together to even out skin tone and promote collagen production, plus licorice root extract to help with puffiness and inflammation. It can cut your morning routine in half.”
Kayla likes to freshen up during the day with a spritz of Avène Thermal Spring Water. The fine mist helps to soothe, soften, and calm skin. “It’s amazing to use just before applying moisturizer,” she says. “I love that it makes my skin feel instantly hydrated.”
At night, Kayla uses Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm to remove her face and eye makeup and sunscreen. “It’s super-duper gentle for my eyes, which is an area that flares up if I take off makeup too aggressively,” she explains. “This product offers a much needed solution.”
While she loves using her favorite products, Kayla also believes that a healthy lifestyle is an important part of skincare. “If nothing has changed in your routine but you’re noticing break outs or flare ups, look at other factors and go see a dermatologist,” she suggests. “My skin looks best when I’m stress-free, relaxed, happy, drinking plenty of water, and eating well.”

It’s also a good idea to have realistic expectations when building a skincare routine. “The vast majority of products and treatments do not offer instant results,” Kayla explains. “It takes time, but it can come together.”
